A week under canvas, a family trip with a lot of walking or a stint helping at a summer camp all impose the same rules: limited laundry, unpredictable weather and no shops. The packing list matters far more than in ordinary life, because a garment that fails on day two is a garment you carry for another five days. The aim is a small set of items that dry quickly and work in combination.<\/p>\n

Count in drying time, not in days<\/h2>\n

The real constraint outdoors is not how many clothes you own but how fast they dry. Heavy cotton takes most of a day on a line in British weather; a cotton blend or a light synthetic is dry by lunchtime. That is why experienced campers pack fewer, faster-drying items rather than one outfit per day.<\/p>\n

Underwear is the part people underpack<\/h2>\n

Bring more briefs than days and at least two bras, so one can dry whilst the other is worn, and choose full-cut styles that do not migrate when you walk. Band fit matters more than usual here because you will be carrying bags and moving all day. Sports bras: match the bra to the activity<\/h2>\n

One sports bra does not cover everything. A soft compression style is fine for a gentle walk and inadequate for running or a day of lifting and climbing, where an encapsulated style with a firm band and adjustable straps does a genuinely different job. If you are doing both on the same trip, that is two bras, not one.<\/p>\n

Layers beat a single warm thing<\/h2>\n

Evenings outdoors drop sharply, and a single thick fleece leaves you either hot or cold with nothing in between. A vest, a long-sleeved top, a hoodie and a waterproof shell cover roughly everything a British summer can produce. Choose the mid layer in something that stays warm when slightly damp.<\/p>\n

The packing list that works<\/h2>\n

  • Two bras minimum, plus one more if any activity is high-impact<\/li>\n
  • Briefs for the number of days plus two, in cotton or a quick-drying blend<\/li>\n
  • Three tops, one long-sleeved, all in fabric that dries overnight<\/li>\n
  • Two pairs of leggings or trousers, one dedicated to sitting around camp<\/li>\n
  • A hoodie and a waterproof, packed at the top of the bag rather than the bottom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Chafing, damp and long days<\/h2>\n

    Walking all day in warm weather means friction under the bust and at the inner thigh, and the usual defences are dry skin, breathable fabric and a change of underwear halfway through the day. Longer-legged shorts or capris solve the thigh problem without any product at all. If soreness persists after the trip, that is a matter for a doctor rather than another purchase.<\/p>\n

    Washing without a machine<\/h2>\n

    Handwashing bras is not difficult: cool water, a small amount of detergent, press rather than wring, and dry flat or over a line without pegs pulling the cups out of shape. Wringing is what deforms moulded cups, and hanging by one strap stretches it permanently. Nothing goes near a fire or a heater to speed things up, since heat destroys elastane faster than anything else.<\/p>\n

    What to leave at home<\/h2>\n

    New footwear, anything white, and any garment you have not worn for a full day already. A trip is the worst possible place to discover that a bra rubs or a waistband rolls.
